State of the Art Dog Park officially opened at Banchoff Park
Ewing Township celebrated the generosity of John and Anna Karras, long time dog lovers with the dedication of the John and Anna Karras Memorial Dog Park on Monday, November 18, 2019. Funded by a $100,000 donation that Karras left in his will to the Township for the betterment of pets in our community, the project first began in late 2018.
Prior to the donation, the section for dogs at the pre-existing dog park was small and not a dog park proper with no way to separate large dogs from small, or water source for owners and their pets. The new dog park features a 100’ x 225’ area of Banchoff Park, adjacent to the old dog park. There is fencing high enough to keep the jumpers from jumping and buried deep enough into the ground to keep the diggers from digging and escaping. And there will, no doubt, be plenty of fellow dogs for pets to socialize with in safe, off-leash play.
The Township followed recommended best practices in the establishment of our new dog park and created separate small and large dog areas. Dogs under 35 pounds are considered "small; " larger pooches are those over 35 pounds. Puppies, too, have their own "safe space" away from the roughhousing of larger pets in the former dog park. The Large and Small Dog spaces each have their own water fountains for people and pets that are operational 365 days a year. A water fountain for the Puppy Park is in the works, as well as additional upgrades. There’s plenty of space for your dogs to run around, with tunnels and climbing stations, as well as waste stations with plastic bags.
“The Dog Park wouldn’t be possible without the generous gift we received from the Karras family,” said Mayor Steinmann. “We are thrilled to have a state-of-the art Dog Park in Ewing that will ensure that pets will have a safe place for active play in order to lead healthy and active lives.” So, come out and check out this wonderful addition to the Ewing Park System and enjoy a chance to interact with your fellow dog lovers and their pets.
Please be sure to follow our Dog Park Rules while enjoying our off-leash area with your pets.
