Addressing Council

Public Participation

The Township of Ewing welcomes engaged citizens and active citizen participation at Council meetings!  We hope that the information below will help you voice your opinions on the issues that matter to you.

Council Meeting Agendas

An agenda for each meeting is posted on the web site by the end of business day the Friday prior to the public meeting. Notice of meeting changes (date/time) or additional special meetings will also be posted on this website and listed in Ewing’s official newspapers, the Trenton Times and Trentonian.

The agenda is prepared by the Township Clerk with items proposed by the Township President and Administration. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted in the municipal building and on the web site and emailed, as a courtesy, to those who request it. Sign up via RAVE Mobile Alerts powered by Smart911, our community notification system, to be notified when an agenda is published.

Statements and Comments from the Public

After Council discussion of each item on the agenda, members of the public are welcomed and encouraged by the Council President to comment on that particular item on the Agenda.

Citizens also have the opportunity to address the Council on subjects of interest during the “statements and comments from members of the public” for items not on the Agenda segment of the meeting. Members of the public are requested to sign in on the sheet provided in the front of the room. All questions and comments from the public will be directed to the Council President.  When addressing the Council, please give your name and address.

The Council invites and encourages participation by the public in its meetings, and members of the public may utilize five minutes of time for remarks and questions. Any further remarks or questions beyond the time limit must be authorized by the President of the Council.

  • Open public comment is permitted at the conclusion of the business meeting.
  • Sign up on the sheet, noting the topic on which you will speak. (The sheet is at the table in front of the Council dais.)  Council also invites latecomers to speak at this time who have not signed up.
  • Come forward to the microphone when you speak.
  • When recognized by the Chair, state your name and address for the official record before directing your question or comment to the presiding officer.  Be sure to speak clearly into the microphone as comments are recorded for the public record.
  • You will have five minutes to speak, unless otherwise instructed.

These are guidelines to help Council members hear as many different viewpoints as possible in the limited time available. If you are speaking for a group, you should tell the Council how the group developed the position that you are presenting.

If previous speakers have already made the comments you wish to make, feel free to simply identify yourself and indicate your agreement with what has already been said.

During the Public Comment Periods, citizens have called the Council's attention to a wide variety of issues concerning the Township.

Tips for Successful Comments

  • Meetings run best when everyone respects common courtesy and decorum.
  • Be open and honest.
  • Keep your comments clear and focused.
  • The chair has the right to cut off discussion that is too personal, too loud, or too crude.
  • Respect the views of others
  • Allow others to finish speaking before commenting.

 Thank you for your involvement!
