A contingent of the Glendale Civic Association members, in conjunction with several of the members of the Ewing Green Team, came out the last Saturday in June to spruce up the Shabakunk Creek Park, a small pocket park on Olden Ave, as a part of Ewing Township’s Adopt-a-Park program.
The volunteers installed a selection of New Jersey native plants in the planting bed around the park sign and also updated a park cleanup conducted in early April by Ewing Green Team members.
The Shabakunk Creek is a tributary of the Assunpink Creek whose waters ultimately flow into the Delaware River. The name Shabakunk is from the Lenape word meaning "shore land".[1] The park is situated on Olden Avenue between Parkside Ave. and Pennington Road.
The volunteers included Glendale Civic Association members John Anastasio, Karen and George Sare, Heidi Furman, and Councilwoman Jennifer Keyes-Maloney, also part of the Association, and representatives from the Ewing Green Team including Joanne Mullowney and Lynn Robbins.
“These community volunteers made a significant contribution to Ewing’s Adopt-a-Park program last weekend. They purchased and donated the native plantings to help beautify one of our local parks, as well as helping in our goal of preserving natural habitats in our community and certifying Ewing as a Community Wildlife Habitat in the National Wildlife Federation’s program,” said Mayor Bert Steinmann.

Ewing’s Adopt-a-Park projects include litter and recyclables cleanups, as well as planting of native plants, and much more. The program is a part of the town’s Clean Communities efforts to secure and promote a litter-free and more beautiful community. Programs include: Adopt-a-Stormdrain, Scoop the Poop, Plogging efforts by individuals, as well as community cleanups run intermittently throughout the year.
