Ewing Township Marks Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day

April 2 marks Autism Awareness and Acceptance Day, an opportunity to recognize and support members of our community on the autism spectrum and reaffirm our commitment to inclusive, responsive public service.

In Ewing Township, both police and fire services continue to take meaningful steps to better serve individuals with autism and their families.

The Ewing Township Police Department participates in New Jersey’s Blue Envelope Program, a simple but impactful initiative designed to improve communication during traffic stops. The program allows drivers with autism or communication-related conditions to present a blue envelope containing essential documents and optional information about their needs. This helps officers adjust their approach, creating safer, more predictable interactions for everyone involved.

Residents interested in obtaining a blue envelope may contact the Community Relations Unit at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or visit police headquarters.

The Ewing Township Fire Department has also taken important steps to enhance its response capabilities. All career staff—including recent hires—have successfully completed specialized Autism Awareness Training for First Responders. This training focuses on recognizing behavioral and sensory characteristics, effective communication techniques, and de-escalation strategies to ensure individuals with autism are treated with care, dignity, and understanding during emergency situations.

In addition to training, the Fire Department actively supports the autism community through participation in local events, including the annual POAC Autism Walk. This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Fisher Middle School.

Through continued training, outreach, and programs like the Blue Envelope initiative, Ewing Township remains committed to serving all residents with professionalism, compassion, and respect.
