It’s Spring Cleanup Season

Ewing’s Spring Cleanup Season Kicks Off This Month

Tell your friends and assemble your coworkers, it’s spring cleanup time. Whatever date you choose to attend, you will be working with like-minded individuals with a common goal of creating a more beautiful community.

There are two upcoming dates to choose from for our traditional spring cleanup of our waters, parks, and roadsides. They are set to take place on a number of successive dates in April. Mayor Bert Steinmann, Township Council, and the Ewing Green Team encourage all Ewingites to join in and volunteer to help make Ewing a more beautiful place for all to live and enjoy.

TCNJ Student Volunteer Spring Cleanup

Our Kick Off Spring Cleaning event began yesterday, April 5th, with an approximate 60 member crew of TCNJ student volunteers working in the Hollowbrook/Braeburn Community section of town. Students did cleanups at the Hollowbrook Community Center and surroundings as well as at Higgs Park. (See pictures following)

April 15 Earth Day Stream Cleanup

Next up will be the Ewing Green Team’s annual Stream Cleanup held in partnership with The Watershed Institute on Saturday, April 15th from 9 – 11 am. This early Earth Day celebration will gather volunteers to work together to show the West Branch of the Shabakunk Creek at the Home Depot location, 1621 North Olden Ave., Ewing, some much needed TLC. Pre-registration is required. The Watershed Institute reports that over the past decade, 7,900 enthusiastic volunteers have removed more than 141,000 pounds of trash from local area communities. These cleanup events are a great way to get outside, work together to keep our waterways clean, and improve wildlife habitat.

See the Ewing Green Team post “Protect Our Local Watershed At Our Annual Stream Cleanup in Ewing” for more information. This year The Watershed will be offering cleanup volunteers a complimentary tree sapling to say thank you for helping keep our waterways clean! They will not be offering stream cleanup t-shirts as they typically do to reduce our environmental impact and conserve limited natural resources. One cotton t-shirt takes 650 gallons of water to produce while a single oak tree can host 532 species of caterpillars, 147 species of birds, 120 species of mammals, and 60 species of reptiles and amphibians. In addition, one mature white oak can absorb over 2000 gallons stormwater per year which can reduce stormwater runoff pollution, flooding, and recharge groundwater.

Earth Day - April 22nd Ewing Parks Spring Cleanup

Come out and help the Ewing Green Team with a spring cleaning at our local Ewing Parks on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd from 10:30 -noon and/or noon – 1:30 pm.  We will start at Moody Park, finish off Higgs Park from the TCNJ Student Cleanup, and perhaps move on to the Johnson Trolley Trail as needed. Exact locations after Moody Park TBD as needed.  Pre-registration is required.
