Ewing Township awarded FEMA SAFER grant

Ewing Township awarded FEMA SAFER grant to increase staffing

This week the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that Ewing Township has been awarded a federal grant of nearly $1,000,000 to hire additional firefighters.

"We wish to thank FEMA and the members of New Jersey's congressional delegation, Senators Booker and Menendez and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman for acknowledging the efforts of Ewing's firefighters with this SAFER Grant," said Mayor Bert Steinmann.

"The SAFER grant will enhance our staffing needs and our ability to deliver to the best services possible to Ewing residents, and help us keep our community safe. Our firefighters put their lives on the line each day, and we must make certain that they have the resources they need to save lives," added Mayor Steinmann.
Once hired the new firefighters will join the township's current staff of 9 full-time members who are currently assigned to the various township stations.

The SAFER program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and seeks to increase the number of frontline firefighters to ensure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and firerelated hazards.

The FEMA SAFER program has provided millions of dollars in grants to New Jersey fire departments. Without this funding municipalities across the state could not hire greatly needed positions to bolster staffing to effectively respond to emergencies.

The grant will pay for the salaries and medical benefits of the new firefighters for three full years. Steinmann concluded, "This funding allows us to ensure the safety of our residents while keeping taxes stable."
