Medical waste disposal

Unused Drugs

Ewing Township participates in Project Medicine Drop, an initiative run by the New Jersey Attorney General to offer an easy and convenient way to properly dispose of  unused medications that you no longer use. The Project Medicine Drop Box is at Police Headquarters located next to the information window of the police department at 2 Jake Garzio Drive. This service is available 24-7.  For more information check out our Project Medicine Drop page.

Liquids and Medical wastes

Liquid medications should not be disposed down the drain because wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove pharmaceutical compounds.  To prevent medications from ending up in local waterways and drinking water we recommend the following:  Mix liquid medicine with undesirable substances like coffee grinds, cat litter, or dirt.  Place bottles in an opaque container, like a yogurt container, and secure the lid; or wrap in a dark colored plastic bag and dispose in the trash.  Do NOT recycle.

Syringe Disposal

Syringe disposal is regulated by state law.  (N.J.S.A. 2C:36-6.1) All persons who use syringes or reusable hypodermic needles must destroy their needles and syringes.  See the Safe Syringe Disposal brochure from the NJ Department of Health.

Local Drop Off Location

Capital Health Regional Medical Center - Hopewell operates a drop-off location for safe disposal of syringes.  You must be a resident of Mercer County to participate.  Sharps must be in a biohazard container or puncture resistant container. The Hospital will also provide a new container.  Contact Environmental Services Dept. with questions.
