Ewing Community Gardens

The Township of Ewing offers its residents a 110-plot community garden where they can grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers in a sunny, fenced location and be a part of the “grow local” movement.

The Ewing Community Garden is located on Whitehead Road Extension, at the back of Sherbrooke Park. Plots (approximately 16’ x 20’ each) are available for rent beginning each March, and gardeners can grow almost year ‘round. The site is sunny, fully fenced with an 8’ deer fence, provides water access, garbage pickup, and a porta-john (in season). It is divided into two sections, organic and non-organic. Township staff till the non-organic side each spring prior to the start of the gardening season and set up the plot markers. The organic side is not tilled by the Township but gardeners can elect to till as they see fit.

The official opening of the gardens is weather determined and announced later in the season.

Registration and Fees

Gardeners can rent up to 2 plots a year for a nominal fee. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration begins the first Monday after March 1. The first two weeks of the registration period, previous year plot-holders may reserve their plots from the prior year. New applicants may register after the 1st two-week period or approximately March 15th. If there are still plots available on April 15th gardeners may purchase additional plot(s). Site Management

Half of the site is for gardeners who garden per organic principles. No herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or non-organic fertilizers are permitted. Good Neighbor Guidelines are distributed to gardeners at the start of each season to facilitate collaborative efforts between the gardeners, community garden safety; and a community garden environment gratifying to work in; pleasant for gardeners, neighbors, and the public to look upon.

Ewing Community Gardens Association

Cooperation between the gardeners is organized by the Ewing Community Gardens Association. The group was formed in 2012 in response to the need for organizing the gardeners who garden at the site. Through the impetus of the Association, the gardens were revitalized and expanded during the 2013 season. The Association provides a framework for the gardeners to work together for overall site management and improvement. It meets periodically during the gardening season and prior to the start of the season to plan for the spring cleanup and to discuss garden issues/questions needing community attention. The group also facilitates team work between gardeners helping beginning gardeners to team up with more experienced gardeners who offer advice and assistance. For more information and to get involved in the Ewing Community Gardens Association go to the Ewing Community Gardens Association website.
