Green Team

The formation of a “Green Team” is the first step in establishing a community sustainability program. Green Teams leverage the skills and expertise of team members to develop plans, implement programs, and assist with educational opportunities that support the creation of a sustainable community. The role is to lead and coordinate the sustainability activities of the community.

History

The Ewing Green Team was established in 2009 by municipal resolution  [Resolution Authorizing the Participation and Registration in the Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification Program – April 14, 2009] under the auspices of the Ewing Environmental Commission and was first co-chaired by John Hoegl and Peter Boughton.   It is an appointed board composed of thirteen Ewing residents dedicated to building a sustainable community in Ewing Township.  Members serve staggered three year terms.

The Ewing Green Team is part of the statewide Sustainable Jersey effort (www.sustainablejersey.com).  Officially launched in 2009, the Sustainable Jersey program identifies actions that municipalities can implement to go green and then certifies municipalities that have reached recommended milestones.

Achievements

sj_-ewing_silver_logo.pngIn November of 2016 Ewing achieved Sustainable Jersey SILVER Certification!  Of the 565 registered municipalities in New Jersey, Ewing is one of only 198 New Jersey towns that are Sustainable Jersey certified and, only 39 towns that have attained recognition at this level.  By becoming a Sustainable Jersey certified town, Ewing Township reinforces its commitment to saving resources, the environment and the planet.

In addition, Ewing also received the 2016 Sustainability Champion award in the medium municipality category (population between 5,000 – 39,999).  The award is for receiving the highest number of points in this population category.  Award winners are selected from the municipalities that were certified or recertified in the designated award year.
